Respec Machines are the build-reset terminals of Borderlands 4 — 7 machines placed exclusively inside Faction Towns and Safehouses across Kairos, allowing Vault Hunters to fully reallocate skill tree points and Specialization assignments at any point in the campaign.
Every machine location is tracked at exact coordinates on the Borderlands 4 interactive map. Respec Machines are marked on the in-game map and compass by a unique recycle symbol icon.
The first Respec Machine becomes available after completing Main Mission 3: Down and Outbound — which unlocks access to The Launchpad Faction Town in The Howl.
From that point onward, Respec Machines are available at every major hub as they unlock through campaign progression.
There is no limit to how many times a Vault Hunter can respec — as long as the required resources are available, skills and Specializations can be reset as often as needed.
Standard Skill Tree Respec costs approximately 10% of the Vault Hunter's current cash balance.
The exact price appears in the interact prompt before any payment is made — check the cost before activating to avoid surprises at low cash levels.
Because the fee is a percentage rather than a fixed amount, resetting early in the campaign is inexpensive; at the endgame with a large cash reserve, it can cost over 1 million. Once the fee is paid, all spent skill points across three trees are fully refunded and can be reallocated freely.
Two scope options are available:
Specialization Respec costs Eridium rather than cash — reflecting the greater power and build impact of the four Specialization roles: Survivor, Bruiser, Sniper, and Runner.
Farm Eridium efficiently through Contracts Board Vile Bounties or Firmware Transfer Machine budgeting before committing to a Specialization respec, as the cost is substantial.
The respec fee is charged the moment you enter the machine menu — not when you confirm a build.
If you enter, browse, and exit without assigning points or selecting Respec Tree/All, the fee is still deducted. You will need to pay again to re-enter. Take the time to plan the new allocation before interacting, or use a build planner externally before approaching the machine.
Multiple reallocations within a single machine session do not incur additional charges — experiment freely once inside without paying again until you exit.
Three machines are concentrated in Dominion City — the most convenient cluster for endgame builds since all three are immediately adjacent to their district's Fast Travel Station:
